Custom Characters[]

In Rance Quest, you are able to create your own Custom Characters. To do so, simply buy the "character sheet" item (costs 1000 x number of characters made) and then do Quest #129: Alice's Guest (which is the process to create the character)

You can have a maximum of 10 custom characters at a time, although you can delete unwanted ones by dragging them to the lower right in the party management screen, then create a new one.

Character Creation[]

Notes[]

Custom Characters have a starting level cap of 20.

There are 3 random templates that determines certain skill costs for different occupations. They are "Treasure type" (has お宝鑑定), "Capture type" (has 捕獲の知識) and "None type" (doesn't have either of the previous two.) This is most important for Sorcerers, which determines what elements they can use, and least important for Gunners and Civilians, whose templates are all similar. You may wish to back-up your save files to get an optimal character and recreating characters.

In later versions of the game, including all English versions, other than Sorcerers having random elements available to them, random templates have been removed.

CG[]

Choose a Face Portrait for your character. If you want, you can create your own by placing a 196x232 BMP/PNG (PNG preferred due to transparency) file in the save data folder under the "Face CG" folder.

Job[]

Choose your character's job. If you don't care about power level, go ahead and choose anything but assuming you are creating characters so that the game is easier, what classes should you choose?

Recommended[]

Ranger
There are only 4 rangers in the game total (without Magnum), and only 2 are storyline characters that are forced on you, meaning you will be running very low on Rangers.
Consider creating additional rangers to Escape battles and Chest Opening/Trap Evasion for dungeon crawling purposes as characters like Suzume are more suitable for fighting.
Guard
Guards are highly likely to be killed so having replacements is good. You can also customize your guards for niche purposes such as giving them Darkness Tolerance or Electric Tolerance for specific battles. Storyline guards tend to have a lot of special skills they want to spend their points on and some of them have inherent disadvantages like Sachiko not being able to remove her shield.
Gunner
Bow Gunners can learn Volley, a skill that uses up all attacks but deals huge damage to the entire enemy group (one of the only 3 skills that can target the entire enemy group, and Rance Attack is only for Rance). Training a couple of them are very helpful in taking out red crystals/bosses while saving your more powerful storyline gunners (such as Urza) for bigger threats.
Healer
Healer is a very good occupation with multiple builds, such as a backline healer, a front row tank or an exorcist, so creating a healer to cover any of these purposes works out fine.
Sorcerer
Custom Sorcerers are able to learn the Magical Drill ability which lets them attack Hannies with any magical attacks. Creating a custom sorcerer with attack focus gives them +20% extra magic which can be later improved in the dark Alice pay2win room with 120% magic growth and Magic talent★★. Magic stat rivaling Pastel Kalar and the ability to smash Hannies with magic such as Black Destruction Beam make a custom sorcerer an extremely effective for clearing monsters while exploring. A male custom with Pheromone also starts every fight with +Attack/Magic buff.

Not Recommended[]

Fighter
While the fighter base class is decent and there's generally not that huge a power leap, you also get A LOT of fighters and there's enough to build them with a wide variety of weapons.
Brawler
Same as Fighters, but Brawlers don't even have weapon choices.
Civilians
The Civilian class sucks as a base class. Storyline characters get special skills to help them (such as Lia's Leazas Lightning Dragon) but custom civilians get no such advantages. You also get plenty of civilians so there's no real need to create more.

In Magnum, the gal monster skill trees have been improved such that Civilians who already have a heavy point investment in their own skills (such as Arlcoate) may now find it more difficult to max the skill out. A dedicated gal monster user is acceptable (although probably still unoptimal)

Speech[]

Not much to say here. Here you can modify the text bubbles that appear for situations like attack, healing, being damaged etc. You can leave these at the default text if you want; it doesn't affect anything besides aesthetics.

Gender[]

Generally, it's best to pick female. Only women can be H'd, meaning they can take advantage of the effects of Morurun curse. There is little advantage to being male in Rance Quest.

In Magnum, Males (and lolis) can now have the effect of the Morurun curse. This requires however doing a special quest that involves raising Kouhime to level 35 first, so women are still able to Morurun faster than men. However, Rizna has a passive skill that raises the attack power of all men in the active party with her and there is a quest that can only be done with an (almost) all-male party. This means it might be worth creating one or two men, but generally it's not recommended.

Bonus Skill[]

You can choose one of the following 10 skills for your custom characters as a bonus. Note that you cannot modify this after creating the character, so think carefully.

Name Description Comments
Stamina Specialist
(体力特化型)
Max HP +50%. Speed -10% Okay choice for front-liners who really want to stay alive and conserve actions. May be good on Healers, Civilians (don't care about speed, only want HP) and Guards.
Attack Specialist
(攻撃特化型)
Attack +20%. Magic +20%. Accuracy -20%. Defense -50%. Resistance -50%. Evasion -50% Do not pick this one. The penalties are just not worth the small attack boost. Would have been worthwhile on a custom Sorcerer if it wasn't for the disadvantages listed previously.
Defense Specialist
(防御特化型)
Defense +20%. Resistance +20%. Evasion +20%. Attack -10%. Magic -10%. Accuracy -10%. Better than the offensive counterpart. If you want to create a defensive Healer, consider this or Stamina Specialist.
Talent Cap+
(才能限界+)
Level Cap is 35. Allows the character to be Morurun'd by Rance without needing to raise their cap with items. However, they can easily be bought from the shop or farmed in Quests (especially Quest #145: Malgrid Dungeon 9th Stratum.
Experience Talent
(経験才能)
Experience gain +20% until level 50 This is a yellow skill, but it seems you can't upgrade it. Not recommended.
Skill Points+
(スキルP+)
Start with +10 Skill Points Very good. Probably the best skill to pick. Do note that this skill falls off hard in World 3, where levels get so high these 10 skill points don't matter anymore.
Mystery Bonus
(謎ボーナス)
At LV 20, 20% chance for each of the following:

HP +500、 Attack +200、 Magic Attack +200、 Accuracy +20 & Evasion +20、 Resilience +50

I don't have specifics on how this skill works. Is it possible to get more than 1 bonus?
  • Note: I did get 2 stat bonuses for my ranger when she leveled up to 20. Resetting the game to find which better stat to be "bonused" made no difference. Seems which bonus to up is fixed from the start (please confirm)
Weak Constitution
(病弱)
HP, Defense, and Resistance -30% Unlocks the ability to purchase the Handicap skill for that character in Quest #106: Dark Alice's Pay2Win Room and makes purchasing upgrades for that character during that quest cheaper.
Go Home
(引きこもり)
20% chance of being removed from the active party after battle Unlocks the ability to purchase the Handicap skill for that character in Quest #106: Dark Alice's Pay2Win Room and makes purchasing upgrades for that character during that quest cheaper.
Stamina Boost
(体力強化)
Boosts maximum HP. This skill is given to a custom character upon not selecting any bonus skill. When equipped, HP is boosted by 200 initially, but, when upgraded, can boost HP by a maximum of 800. If unequipped the skill only boosts HP by half, so 100-400 HP. This skill essentially just gives you the first level of Stamina Boost for free. Not worth getting, so select a bonus skill before finalizing your character.

Purchasable Upgrades[]

You can further upgrade a custom character by doing Quest #106: Dark Alice's Pay2Win Room. Each time an upgrade is selected, the cost increases, starting at 5,000 G for the first, 30,000 G for the second, 70,000 G for the third, 150,000 G for the fourth, 260,000 G for the fifth, 370,000 G for the sixth and 500,000 G for the seventh upgrade. After this, the cost will remain at 500,000 G for each subsequent upgrade. Note that characters which selected the Weak Constitution or Go Home bonus skill have much cheaper upgrades (not above values). You may only pick one ability upgrade and up to 5 skills and all skills cannot be re-learned if removed. Custom characters cannot see exclusive skills from their own class that they can learn naturally.

Raise an Ability[]

Ability Amount
HP +20%
Attack +20%
Magic +20%
Defense +20%
Resistance +20%
Accuracy +30%
Stun +30%
Critical +30%
Evasion +30%
Resilience +30%
Speed +15%

Change Magical Element[]

Sorcerer custom characters have another option to allow the character to switch between Fire-Ice-Light, Ice-Electric-Light, Fire-Light-Darkness, or Onmyou Shikigami magical elements. They also have the option to raise their Magic Talent to ★★, giving access to higher level magic attacks. Both of these options come at a cost equal to your current upgrade price. Magic Talent ★★ has no effect on the Onmyou Shikigami magic.

Evaluation[]

Sometimes when changing screens in dungeons, Rance will have an event where he evaluates one of your custom characters. This usually seems to have no effect, except for one case. The evaluation screens are shown below.

For male characters there's one choice:

<- "Let's calmly evaluate this man..."

  • He's useful... and harmless.
  • He seems popular with the ladies...
  • He's a little interesting. No problem.

The first and third options make Rance have a good impression. The second, a negative one, Can cause Rance to kill off the custom character in a dungeon event.

For female characters there are three sets of choices and there is a particular option that you need to pay attention to:

<- "This chick's..."

  • She's a good, fuckable woman.
  • Hmm... she's still a bit young.
  • Not my type. Not even considering it.

Choosing the second option will give your custom female character the Immature skill (same as Kouhime and several other characters.) This permanently decreases the character's HP, ATK and MAG stat by 20%. This skill cannot be removed. Character can stil be Morurun'd as long as Quest #189: Kouhime's Tea Party has been cleared first. Stats may not update right away, but buying/upgrading a skill or changing equips will. Also a requirement for the Parental Instincts skill to trigger.

The third option removes the ability to Morurun a character completely. However, this can by changing Rance's rating during Quest #106 into either "Too soon" or "Good woman", you can make a female character Morurunable again. If you change the rating to "Too soon" it will not add the Immature skill, this can only happen during dungeon events.

The second choice:

<- "Wondering about her body, mostly her boobs!"

  • She's got good tits.
  • She's small, but that's fine.
  • Huh? What the heck is this?

These choices appear to do nothing.

The third choice:

<- "She thinks of me as..."

  • She loves me.
  • She doesn't have any special feelings for me.
  • She doesn't like me, huh?

These choices appear to do nothing.

It is not known is there are any other combinations of answers with special effects.

Non-human characters cannot be evaluated.
