Disk Warning[]

The Windows version of Rance III will automatically quit if it detects you are not actually playing on Windows. Despite this, during a new game, it double-checks your operating system to see if it should display a warning about inserting a save disk, which it will only do if you are not playing on Windows. This is a remnant of the DOS version. As it is impossible to actually reach this message, it goes effectively unused.

Warning: You need a save disk in order to save your data in the
middle of Rance 3 -Fall of Leazas-.
Please insert a formatted disk into drive 0.
(See Alice's mansion for details.)

The Alice's Mansion section it mentions is also cut content - see Debug Mode, below.

Debug Mode[]

Rance III's Debug Mode is available to players, but is strangely arranged. The first step in the process is as follows:

  1. Start the game fresh.
  2. Go to Alice's Mansion.
  3. Select Youthful Tenets -> Chiibou.
  4. Leave Alice's Mansion.
  5. On the main screen, carefully right click a total of 9 times. If you overshoot, you can restart the count by going back to Alice's Mansion. Be extremely deliberate, as the game will count multiple clicks if you hold the button for more than a fraction of a second (this is because right clicking is also used for the Skip Text feature). You know you are done if the message "(Warning: First timers should look at Alice's mansion)" changes from having parentheses to having square brackets. Keep an eye on those punctuation marks even before you think you're at 9.
  6. Enter Alice's Mansion.

There are three main benefits to Debug Mode, most of which require additional steps to unlock. New entries in Alice's Mansion are available immediately, while there is also a Level Select and a cheat item called the Ring of Happiness that can be activated via additional steps. Be aware that the Level Select and Ring of Happiness are incompatible: activating one will deactivate the other.

Alice's Mansion[]

The following items have been added to the Alice's Mansion menu. Like in past AliceSoft games, these hidden entries seem to have come from a previous version of the game, in this case the DOS release.

Changes[]

Describes features added to the DOS version not mentioned in the manual, chiefly the addition of mouse and joystick controls. This includes full documentation of how to install the DOS version to hard drive, and of a DOS-exclusive screenshot feature.

Option Set[]

This is an advertisment for the Rance III Option Set: a package deal including the Rance III Hint Disk, an OST CD, which became Legend of Rance -Kichiku Densetsu-, and a minigame called The Night Before the Dangerous Culture Festival, a continuation of Alicesoft's 1989 game, Dangerous Tengu Legend. Unlike some of Alicesoft's past games, no details are provided in regards to the hint disk, but the ad teases bonus content.

Present[]

Details a contest tied to the original release. A completion code would have been revealed to players who completed the original versions of Rance III, and would be able to write in before December 1st 1991 (Heisei 3) for a chance to win an Alicesoft-themed phone card. As the WIndows version was released after the end of the contest, it does not include the completion code.

Level Select[]

Note that choosing to use the level select locks you out of the Ring of Happiness (below) and vice versa.

To use the Level Select, activate Debug Mode and then return to the main menu after visiting the unlocked Alice's Mansion. Instead of the menu appearing as normal, you will now be presented with a password entry screen. If you enter an invalid password, the game will loop back to the first digit, so the only choice is to enter a correct password or to reset/quit the game from the top bar.

The password "33412" will cause you to start a new game with no changes. This may be a remnant of some other debug feature that has since been removed, since the level select also includes this option, and it's an awfully complex code to replace a "return to normal" button.

The password "77077" will activate level select. To enter a "0," you must right click instead of selecting a menu item. If you place a number in the third digit slot, it will become impossible to set the value to 0 and you will have to restart. The level select menu will now appear.

The level select menu's options are listed below. Note that the level select options only set immediately relevant game flags, so going back to previous areas may cause unexpected results. Generally speaking, H memories will not be updated even to account for mandatory events.

Level select options are as follows:

  • From Start: Start the game as normal (albeit with the debug output in camp, as described above). As a point of reference, the party begins in the following state:
    • Rance is level 10 with 2000 spare EXP. He has a Longsword, Platemail and the Holy Shield.
    • Sill is level 10 with 2000 spare EXP. She has a Haies staff and Special Order Clothes.
    • Kanami is level 25 with 0 spare EXP. She has a Short Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • The party has 256 GOLD.
    • The party starts with 5 Seirogans, 2 Ryuukakusens, and 1 Energy Drink. The other level select options leave these untouched, so they won't be mentioned again.
  • After Rola: Start the game in Ice (Ice's CG does not appear on screen). The plot has advanced to the point where the party is ready to depart for Kanra. The party's equipment has updated, even though this is impossible, as there are no equipment shops before reaching Kanra.
    • Rance is level 15 with 139 EXP. He has a Lightning Sword, Crimson Armor and the Holy Shield.
    • Sill is level 14 with 2000 EXP. She has her default equipment.
    • Kanami is level 34, far above where she should be, with 0 spare EXP. She has a Ninja Sword and default Ninja Clothes.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport (which is impossible at this stage of the game), so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • The party has 256 GOLD.
    • The party has an additional 5 Return Wood and a Source of the Fountain Goddess (an item from much later in the game). Using the Source of the Fountain Goddess, it is possible to talk to Youko for the usual prizes, including entering the Haniwa Temple bonus dungeon.
  • L-Zile: Starts with the ending sequence from the Devils' Passage. After several scenes, the player will regain control inside the L-Zile manor.
    • Rance is level 18 with 639 spare EXP. He has a Lightning Sword, Platemail 2 (weaker than the Crimson Armor he had in "After Rola"), and the Holy Shield.
    • Sill is Level 16 with 639 spare EXP. She has her default equipment.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • Though she is not present, Kanami is Level 35 with 0 EXP. She has a Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • The party has 4500 GOLD.
  • After L-Zile: Starts in the inn after the L-Zile caverns dungeon. There are graphical errors and one of Rance's expressions is missing, essentially showing a "framed" section of GUI background by mistake
    • Rance is level 20 with 639 EXP. He has a Lightning Sword, Officer's Armor, and the Holy Shield.
    • Sill is level 18 with 639 EXP. She has a Sylph Staff and her default Special Order Clothes.
    • Kanami is level 36 with 0 EXP. She has a Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • The party has 4500 GOLD.
  • After fall of Red: This scenario was hastily assembled and appears later in the code than its menu position would suggest (second-last overall). It begins in the H-scene with Shizuka and sets very few flags. As a result, the party are in their starting conditions (see From Start), the only difference being Shizuka herself. The only unusual change is that the player is given the Devil's Passport.
  • Hyperbuilding: Starts with the scene of Satella attacking headquarters and kidnapping Sill.
    • Rance is level 27 with 1639 EXP. He has the Lightning Sword, Officer's Armor, and Normal Shield.
    • Kanami is level 38 with 1000 EXP. She has the Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • Shizuka, Sel and Milli appear to be in their starting conditions.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • Though she is not present, Sill is level 25 with 1639 EXP. She has a Slyph Staff and her Special-Order clothes.
    • The party has 256 GOLD.
  • Before The-O: The player begins in Red (Red's CG does not appear on-screen). The player must go to the Inn as normal to begin the Battle of The-O.
    • Rance is level 31 with 8639 EXP. He has the Holy Sword, Armour and Shield.
    • Sill is level 27 with 8639 EXP. She has a Slyph Staff and her Special-Order clothes.
    • Kanami is level 40 with 0 EXP. She has the Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • Shizuka, Sel and Milli appear to be in their starting conditions.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • The player has 14500 GOLD.
  • Leazas Castle: The party has just returned from the battle with the Golden Hanny. One of Rance's portraits is missing again, as per the glitch in "After L-Zille." The player regains control inside of Leazas Castle's secret passage.
    • Rance is level 38 with 2639 EXP. He has the Holy Sword, Armour and Shield.
    • Sill is level 27 with 8639 EXP. She has a Slyph Staff and her Special-Order clothes.
    • Kanami is level 40 with 0 EXP. She has the Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • The player has 12000 GOLD.
    • While they are not present, Shizuka, Sel and Milli each have 3000 spare EXP. They are otherwise unchanged from their starting conditions.
  • 6F: The player instantly gains control on the 6th floor of Leazas Castle, placed just before the fight with the clone party members.
    • Rance is level 43 with 2639 EXP. He has the Demon Sword Chaos, no Armour (but still 50 defence as per the Holy Armor he should be wearing) and the Holy Shield.
    • Sill is level 41 with 2639 EXP. She has a Slyph Staff and her Special-Order clothes.
    • Kanami is level 44 with 10000 EXP. She has the Ninja Sword and Ninja Clothes.
    • Shizuka has 1000 EXP, but is otherwise unchanged from her starting condition.
    • Sel is level 30 with 1000 EXP. She has her default equipment.
    • Lia is in her starting condition.
    • Maris is level 41 with 1000 EXP. She has a Buster Sword and her default Priestess' clothes.
    • The party has the Devil's Passport, so Feliss will appear in battle.
    • The party has 256 GOLD.
  • MAP Test: This is actually an alternate mode, allowing the developers to explore a map's appearance without being restricted by the walls (although there is no way to interact with it). The only available map is Lis' Cave. This feature is not fully documented and reacts oddly to right clicking.

When you start the game in level select mode, some debug information will appear every time you go to Camp. This information appears before Sill or Kanami's opening line at Camp, and is written in the following format: (A)(B)(C)[X,Y]. A, B and C relay the values of VAR0001, VAR0002 and VAR0003, respectively. These variables are used in an uncountable number of ways throughout the game and will not be useful unless the player is debugging something they know intimately. X and Y indicate the player's coordinates in the current map, and will show as 0 (or possibly an invalid number) in other circumstances.

Ring of Happiness[]

To unlock the Ring of Happiness, unlock debug mode but do not leave Alice's Mansion. Instead, view the Staff menu. After it is complete, the text *Present* will appear. Return to the main menu (the level select password screen will not appear) and start a new game. You now have the Ring of Happiness, which will multiply your EXP and GOLD earnings by 10, making the game much easier.

The ring first appeared as a hidden debug item in Toushin Toshi (detailed here).
