Removed Stat Modifiers[]

Enemy troops have two stats that modify their Attack and Defence, which is used to distinguish special troops from the rank-and-file. For example, all named, Zeth heroes give their mages +2 defence. For example, a Troop Attack of 5 and a modifier of 2 would read: "5 (+2)", for a total of 7, while a Troop Attack of 5 with a modifier of 0 reads "5 (+0)". This bonus is purely for the sake of showing the player these units are special on the stats screen, since every unit's Troop Attack and Troop Defense is assigned individually, and there was nothing stopping them from just giving each special unit a higher Attack or Defense stat.

In practice, these stat bonuses only range from 0-2, but it seems that there were plans to include other kinds of modifiers. The only remnant of this is in the stat display code, and there is no code to actually support these unusual variables in battle. If the bonus was exactly 10, the stat display will not list a bonus at all, so a Troop Attack of 5 with a modifier of 10 would simply read "5". If the value was over 10, the modifier would have been displayed as a negative equal to -(VAR-10) (since System 3.5 cannot store negative variables), so a Troop Attack of 5 with a modifier of 12 would become "5 (-2)".

Again, the combat code doesn't actually use these special modifiers and just adds the modifier no matter its value. So if you hacked in a Troop Attack of 5 with a modifier of 10, you would actually get 15 attack, and Troop Attack 5 with modifier 12 would become 17.

Removed Units[]

Silky Littleraisin has an unused unit in the data, her stats are as follows:

Name HP Atk Def Magic Strikes Troop Type Starting Troops Troop Atk Troop Def
Silky 11 24 10 4 40 Chimeras 0 0 0

Note how she has a (unique!) troop type, but no actual troops.

The game's unit data includes two blanks: a blank player unit (ID# 48) that can be found between Rolex and Louis the mercenary, and a blank enemy unit (ID# 98) between La Vaswald and Chizuko. Their stats are all 0 and their text variables single spaces.

Coding Observations[]

  • Diphtheria Hero has an unusual troop count of 2007 which, besides being an unusual number, is well over his maximum of 1200 (a value that would have been similar to other Free Cities heroes).
  • Hanty Kalar's enemy data starts with 2 more HP than her max (8 vs 6).

Because of these mismatched maximums, Diphtheria Hero cannot regain troops until he drops below 1200, and Hanty cannot heal until she drops below 6.
